Botanical drawings, paintings, jewelry and fine furniture will be showcased in the ChathamArts Gallery during the month of August. The work of four Chatham County artists, Emma Skurnick, Kathleen Jardine, Norma Hawthorne and Douglas G. Trimble will be on display at the gallery in historic downtown Pittsboro. The public is invited to meet the artists during an opening reception August 5 from 12 noon to 5, when Pittsboro galleries, shops and eateries will be open for First Sunday, with arts and crafts for sale on the street. Emma Skurnick is a full-time freelance scientific illustrator whose work is published internationally. Her illustrations can be seen at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, American Scientist Magazine, The NC Aquarium and the NC Wildlife Resources Center. She has been a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators since 2000, serving two terms as chapter president. Kathleen Jardine has exhibited in over 60 national and international shows since 1981. Among her many awards are top prizes from curators of the Metropolitan Museum, the Hirschorn Museum, and London's Tate Gallery. Her beautiful and idiomatic paintings, made meticulously from life, are in many fine private and corporate collections. She is a member of the Chatham Artists Guild, charter member of the Watercolor USA Honor Society and a signature member of the National Watercolor Society. Norma Hawthorne creates exquisite necklaces using a combination of semi-precious stones, hand-blown glass beads from Italy and California, silver, gold, and pearls. Her unique designs feature long strands that can be doubled and tripled as well as multi-strand pieces that explore texture and color. Norma is a member of the Chatham Artists Guild. Douglas G. Trimble, using woods from around the world, brings together the functional, the playful and the sensual in his uniquely designed furniture creations. "I let the wood talk to me, and together we create wonderful forms of expression. It's all in the curves." |
