Stained glass Artist DINI MITCHELL's work encompasses a variety of colors and textures to make both decorative and functional pieces. She chooses glass that works best for a particular piece – especially when applying an age-old craft to modern designs. Sculptor ZEN PALKOSKI's works in wood have evolved from gnomes, Santas, and shore birds to larger works in cedar. He is best known for his wood spirits, wood nymphs and female figures. GRETCHEN NIVER's latest works in glass are three-dimensional made by 'slumping' glass into vases and bowls. She creates impromptu designs, picking and choosing the glass colors as each project progresses. TIMOTHY "COOKIE" BROWN uses a technique called "segmented" in which individual small pieces of wood are assembled together like pieces of a puzzle. He uses the wood lathe to implement his design and to bring out the wood's beauty, focusing on the overall design and shape. JERRY BAKER uses his lathe to sculpt large and small vessels sometimes using painted and dyes to add color to his pieces. His pieces are bold with distinctive shapes. You can meet the artists and see their work at the opening show at ChathamArts on August 6, from 12 noon to 5, when Pittsboro shops, galleries and eateries will be open for First Sunday with arts and crafts for sale along the main street. ChathamArts Gallery is also open every week from Wednesday-Saturday 11-5 at 121 Hillsboro St., Pittsboro, 919-542-0394, info@chathamarts.org |
