As my husband and I travel - and it is our favorite occupation now days, I carry a sketch book, pens, a travel set of watercolors and brushes, and, most important, my digital camera.
Upon return, I study my sketches and photos to see which ones will make good paintings. Once selected, I pencil sketch, then finish the drawing in India Ink. Following this, I add watercolor to complete the work.
Most often, the painting is not a reproduction of the photo - I interpret what I see with line and color. Sometimes I select only a portion of the sketch or photo to paint - other times I will add elements to enhance the picture.
In addition to my own travel photos, I have painted patrons favorite subjects from their journeys.
My work isn’t limited to travel subjects. I will do some paintings with watercolor only, some with ink only, some still life works, a few flowers and landscapes. The latest endeavor is pastel portraits of peoples’ pets. Most of these are commissioned.
I began painting in this style in late 2003. My work has been shown at the Chatham Arts Gallery in Pittsboro, the Chatham Senior Center, the Fearrington Gathering place - and it can be found in several homes in Fearrington, Galloway Ridge; around North Carolina, Virginia, California, and in Chicago.
I do commission work - paintings of people’s homes and from photos of their travels, or of pets as noted above.
