Carolyn Davenport, Mixed Media Collage

davenportAs a painter and mixed media collage artist, I use the natural landscape for an inspirational starting point; always looking for an abstract quality to develop the composition.  My process is to make a painting using dyed or stained papers.  I use acrylics, watercolor and inks to create the papers I will tear into shapes.  Layers of color and texture are applied to canvas or 300 lb. cold press watercolor paper. Adjusting values and colors, overlaping, adding texture, the image starts to emerge.  I pull it out by over painting and glazing.  The use of line and other markings are essential to focus the work.
With abstract imagery it is up to each individual to find meaning or connection.  It is the intention that each person can see something different, responding to the painting from their own view point.

I have a BFA in painting from the University of Illinois, post graduate painting at Carnegie Mellon University and I have studied with Gerald Brommer and Barbara Nechis.
I was a freelance artist and illustrator in New York City for many years working primarily with publishers.  I am a member of The Society of Illustrators.
My work has appeared in publications and in private collections across the country.
My paintings have been in various juried exhibitions. Most recently, Carolinas Got Art in Charlotte, NC.
