Andrew Wilson, Photographer / Digital Artist
I graduated in May 2010 with a degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville where I focused on botany. I have been taking pictures as a hobby since 2005 and I believe that photography compliments the study of life and the natural world. I feel a strong connection to the universe when I am outdoors and photography is a great tool for exploring the infinite beauty of nature. I take pictures for myself because it is an internal, meditative and spiritual experience for me.
I primarily photograph natural objects and I like to express myself creatively through digital manipulations. From stitching panoramas to putting together surreal compilations and kaleidoscopes, I enjoy taking a photograph that originated in nature and turning it into an image that would never be found in nature. Every person and all other living beings have their own perception of this world, and getting a glimpse of another perception than your own is always a learning experience. Photography is an art of recording something that is real, tangible, and present. Manipulating photos adds another level of complexity because the original image is filtered through the perception of the artist.
Nature is complex, but it is also governed by simple constant laws. I like to explore the complexity that arises from simple repeated algorithms such as tessellations of hyberbolic space, using the Golden Ratio, and creating phyllotactic spirals. I also like to toy with our perception by creating 3-dimensional stereograms.
I am very connected with my photography and I like to see the entire process through. I print, mat, and frame everything myself, except for very large prints, using my Epson R1900 and a mat cutter.
