Andrew Dixon, Sculptor
At the beginning of my life (late 1960’s through the 1970’s) I had to spend time in the hospital. I read books, lots of books, and then I began to draw. When I was old enough to work, my father persuaded me to take a mold making (machine shop work) apprenticeship in my late teens through early twenties. It is only in the last five years that I have begun to sculpt out of metal and clay.
My work gravitates toward the illustration of basic physical principles with a strong emphasis on movement. I am asking questions about phenomenon such as light, gravity, spin, growth, decay, entropy. I am looking at these basic universal themes and representing them in my work.
The challenge is connecting design to principle in such a way that people will understand my art. It is my hope that some individuals will experience serendipity and come away from the experience enlightened.
What I am doing now:
I am in partnership with Bob Wade Studio (Cary, NC) producing large murals and lowrelief carvings for various commercial businesses. My own work is producing 2D art (pencil, pastel, charcoal), metal sculpture, designing functional artwork using CAD, making metal tools and equipment for artists in the area.
